Goa
welcomes The Silver Star Appeal
After
successful establishment of Silver Star Appeal in UK, it is being
launched in Goa, India.
The
diabetes pilot test camp was conducted on 05th April 2009
at Regina Martyrum Hall, Salcete, Assolna, Goa.
Rev. Fr. Lucio Dias, the Chief Guest
was happy that the village of Assolna was chosen as the launching
pad for the activities of the Silver Star Appeal in India and wished
the very best in its future endeavors
Dr.Francisco Colaco, eminent physician and
social activist said, "India has the rare distinction of having
the title of being the diabetic capital of the world and therefore
there is need to take immediate steps to create awareness of this
disease".
Prof.Sushila
Sawant Mendes complimented the different initiatives taken by Rt Hon
Keith Vaz.MP in the areas of health and education in the past years
in Goa and said that this program was a big step forward for Silver
Star Appeal (Goa) in the area of reaching out and creating diabetes
awareness among the poorest of the poor.
The Chair of Silver Star Appeal (India)
Mr Dilip Francis while proposing the vote of thanks said “Silver
Star Appeal (India) will be successful only with the help of Goans”
and requested future support and co operation for Diabetes Test
camps and all initiatives taken by Silver Star Appeal (India).
A total of 64 people were tested at the
camp. Dr Natasha Pharia and Dr Nandini Menon supervised and
discussed with the public about their diabetes results while Ms
Justina Olivera (Nurse) conducted the diabetes test. Approximately
30 people attended the public meeting. In the view of doctors most
of the people had diabetes and they were advised to consult their
general practitioners for further treatment. The local people found
the test camp very useful and were pleased with Silver Star for
organizing the program. They also requested that such programs
should be conducted in future too.

Placement in India
A Pharmacy student from Leicester is putting to practice the skills he has learnt as part of degree to assist a
charity with diabetes testing in India.
Shailen Karia (pic.), 20, has just
started his third year of study at De Montfort University (DMU)
(pic.) and
headed out to Goa on 20 September to spend two weeks testing people
for diabetes.
The trip has been organised by DMU Pharmacy Professor
Joan Taylor (pic.) and Silver Star Appeal, a charity which campaigns to
provide diabetes awareness.
Silver
Star has recently opened an office in Goa and Shailen
will travel around in one of the charity’s Mobile Diabetes
Assessment Units offering free testing to people in the community.

“Hello! I arrived yesterday afternoon and the first thing I met was
the heat! I really cant believe how hot it is! 30’C and still
raining a little. On arrival I met a representative from The Silver
Star Appeal, Dilip Francis. He is very nice and friendly. He kindly
took me to my hotel and let me unpack and rest for a bit. Later he
introduced me to Sushila Mendez, a trustee of The Silver Star
Appeal. Today was my first day at Ranbaxy, an Indian pharmaceutical
company specializing in making generics. The plant I’m at makes
tablets and all semi-solid dosage forms. Initially I was introduced
to the managing director of the plant and the rest of the morning
was spent with the product development team, who try and improve
existing formulations for the specific dosage forms they produce.
The afternoon was spent with the manufacturing department and I got
to see all the machinery they use to produce
tablets/creams/ointments etc. This reminded me of the tableting
lectures and practical’s we had in the second year. Actually seeing
tablets being made in real life and reading all the SOP’s helped me
understand the manufacturing process of tablets a lot better!”
