Star Appeal test drives its first Mobile Diabetes Assessment Unit
Friday
25th January 2008 was a very exciting day in the life of
the Silver Star Appeal with a dress rehearsal of our newly acquired
first Mobile Diabetes Assessment Unit (MDU).
The
MDU ventured out to educate, inform and assess the population of
Leicester about type 2 diabetes. The first venue for MDU was the
Belgrave Neighbourhood centre, which recently celebrated its 30th
birthday, where participants from the exercise class going on in the
centre came to the MDU to find out some more information about
diabetes and to see if they were at risk.
The
patients were asked questions about their health, family, age and
were weighed and measured to gain a picture of their risk of having
diabetes. After the assessment the patients were given personalised
advice about type 2 diabetes. The assessment were successful in
picking up a number of individuals who were at a very high risk of
suffering from type 2 diabetes. The work of the MDU also managed to
alert some other individuals to the risk that diabetes may pose to
not only themselves but also to their friends and family, with some
people returning to the MDU with family members so that they could
be assessed.

The Silver Star Appeal mobile diabetes unit has been out and about
trying to find some of those 750,000 people living with diabetes in
this country who don’t know it....
