Diabetes Week takes place from 12-18 June 2016. Held around the UK each year, this special week is all about raising awareness of this common condition.
All across the country events will be held to raise funds for Diabetes UK, the charity who organise the week. The charity was formed in 1954 and was called the British Diabetic Association but changed its name in 2000.
It is now the largest diabetes charity in the UK and uses money donated to fund research into the condition and help those suffering from it.
The aim of the week is to raise awareness of diabetes and raise all important funds for the charity which includes their care line. The charity’s care line provides practical information and emotional support to anyone affected by diabetes – whether you suffer from it yourself, or a friend or family member does.
There are a number of ways to take part in this exciting and important week. You could hold a quiz at your local pub or community centre, bake cupcakes, sell some unwanted goods on ebay or hold a raffle to raise awareness of this great cause.
In 2012 Diabetes UK became Guinness World Record holders. How did they do this you may ask? Well on 11 June 2012 they took a total of 556 waist measurements – the most waist circumference measurements taken in eight hours! And that’s pretty amazing.
So what are they planning to do this year? For more information visit the Diabetes Week website and check out the events planned for this year and find out how you can get involved!
